Modeling of Ship Roll Dynamics and Its Coupling with Heave and Pitch

Abstract: In order to study the dynamic behavior of ships navigating in severe environmental conditions it is imperative to develop their governing equations of motion taking into account the inherent nonlinearity of large-amplitude ship motion. The purpose of this paper is to present the coupled nonlinear equations of motion in heave, roll, and pitch based on physical grounds. The ingredients of the formulation are comprised of three main components. These are the inertia forces and moments, restoring forces and moment… Show more

“…Under severe weather conditions, the equations of motions needed to take into account the nonlinearities of the large amplitude ship motion. As a consequence of this, Ibrahim et al [10] showed the coupled nonlinear equations of motion in heave, roll, and pitch based on physical grounds. An overview of the roll dynamic stability under random sea waves was presented in terms of the sample stability conditions and response statistical moments.…”

“…In addition, in order to test the impact of the rotor angular speed and the damping coefficient on the blade, the results proposed by Yan et al [8] are considered. Furthermore, this article presents a system with two degrees of freedom coupled where the transference of energy is studied, being it an additional contribution in the line of the work presented by [9][10][11][12].…”

“…Various models of ship roll dynamics involving nonlinear damping and restoring moments have been developed and studied by many researchers and assessed recently by Ibrahim and Grace [11]. For example, Bass and Haddara [12,13] considered various forms for the roll damping moment and introduced two techniques to identify parameters of various models together with a methodology for their evaluation.…”

“…In the absence of ice impact, the ship roll nonlinear equation of motion in beam sea waves takes the form (see, e.g., [11,26]) which accounts for only the first two terms of the expansion (1):…”

“…Literature on ship roll motion and control using fin stabilizer was surveyed, and a large number of papers are available on the topic [1] . Hickey et al [2] simplified the ship roll-fin stabilisation system as a linear second order transfer function, then a robust controller was designed in use of H ∞ control theory.…”
