Modeling of Probeless Friction Stir Spot Welding of AA2024/AISI304 Steel Lap Joint

Abstract: In the present study, AA2024 aluminum alloy and AISI304 stainless steel were welded in a lap joint configuration by Probeless Friction Stir Spot Welding (P-FSSW) with a flat surface tool. A full factorial DOE plan was performed. The effect of the tool force (4900, 7350 N) and rotational speed (500, 1000, 1500, 2000 RPM) was analyzed regarding the microstructure and microhardness study. A two-dimensional arbitrary Eulerian–Lagrangian FEM model was used to clarify the temperature distribution and material flow w… Show more

“…The maximum relative error between experimental and numerical data was 7%. The thermal field was influenced by the different thermal conductivity and thermal contact conductance (TCC) of used materials [22], [26]. TCC induced a «temperature jump» along the interfaces (welding lines) between each plate and inversion of the thermal flux.…”

“…By both experimental and numerical approach to P-FSSW process investigation, short DT from 1 to 6 s was examined [18], [21]. Moreover, a steady-state condition was demonstrated after a longer DT [22].…”

“…2024 aluminum alloy and 304 steel are two kinds of metals that are widely used in the field of aerospace, so research on the joining of these two metals by the FSW process is necessary. Rashkovets et al [32] performed the friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process of 2024 aluminum alloy and 304 steel and this process was a variant of FSW. In view of this, the UAFSLW of 2024 aluminum alloy to 304 steel was performed under the welding tool slightly plunging into the lower steel plate in this study.…”
