This review provides an introduction to the geodynamic processes that influence tectonic rift evolution and rifted margin architecture. With a strong focus on numerical modeling, I summarize classical and recent insights on rift evolution with differentiation between 2D and 3D concepts and models. One of the key processes during rift evolution is crust-mantle coupling, which controls not only the width of a rift system but also crustal hyperextension and the degree of final margin asymmetry. Accounting for 3D rift geometries allows investigating along-strike heterogeneities, rift segmentation and rift obliquity. Large amounts of sediments have accumulated at rifted margins, especially at the mouths of large rivers and former glaciers, providing important stratigraphic archives and georesources. Shifting the focus from the geological scale of continental extension to the human time scale, natural hazards are discussed regarding earthquakes and volcanic eruptions during active rifting. Finally, I review natural hazards due to passive margin seismicity as well as slope instabilities at heavily sedimented continental margins that have the potential to generate large landslide tsunamis.

The Makran region, which borders southern Iran and Pakistan along the Gulf of Oman, has experienced multiple tsunamis in the last century, with some being triggered by submarine landslides. However, the role played by submarine landslides has been largely neglected in tsunami hazard assessments in the western Makran. In the present study, four different landslide scenarios with volumes of 10-40 km3 are simulated on 25 different locations in the western Makran, resulting in 100 different hypothetical scenarios. The results indicate that Oman’s coastline, a country in the western part of Makran subduction zone, is more vulnerable to the hazard of landslide-generated waves (maximum average of 3.1 m wave height) compared to Iran (maximum average 0.9 m height). Although Chabahar, Iran, and Muscat, Oman, two major cities in the region, experienced severe waves during some scenarios, it can be implied Muscat is more vulnerable to this kind of tsunami due to the significant gap between the maximum and average wave height for all scenarios. We further discuss that applying hypothetical worst-case scenarios can sometimes lead to an overestimation in tsunami hazard assessment. Therefore, more geological, sedimentological, and geotechnical considerations and studies are required for defining submarine landslide worst-case scenarios.

Semi-empirical predictive equations for the initial amplitude of submarine landslide-generated waves: applications to 1994 Skagway and 1998 Papua New Guinea tsunamis

Accurate predictions of maximum initial wave amplitude are essential for coastal impact assessment of tsunami waves generated by submarine landslides. Here, we analyse the existing predictive equations for the maximum initial amplitude (max) of submarine landslide-generated waves and study their performance in reproducing real-world landslide incidents. Existing equations include various landslide parameters such as specific gravity (γ s), initial submergence (d), slide length (B), width (w), thickness (T) and slope angle (θ). To determine how landslide parameters affect wave amplitude, we conduct a systematic sensitivity analysis. Results indicate that the slide volume (V = B × w × T) and d are among the most sensitive parameters. The data from the 1994 Skagway (observed max : 1.0-2.0 m) and 1998 Papua New Guinea (PNG) (observed max : 10-16 m) incidents provided valuable benchmarks for evaluating the performance of the existing equations. The predicted maximum initial amplitudes of 0.03-686.5 m and 3.7-6746.0 m were obtained for the 1994 and 1998 events, respectively, indicating a wide range for wave amplitudes. The predicted estimates for the smaller-sized event, i.e. the 1994 Skagway, appear to be more accurate than those made for the larger event, i.e. the 1998 PNG case. We develop a new predictive equation by fitting an equation to actual submarine landslide tsunamis: max = 50.67 V d 0.34 , where V is the slide volume (km 3), d is initial submergence depth (m), and max is in metres. Our new equation gives wave amplitudes of 1.6 m and 7.8 m for the 1994 and 1998 landslide tsunamis, respectively, which are fairly consistent with real observations.
