Modeling of micro cat’s eye retroreflectors using a matrix-based three-dimensional ray tracing technique

Abstract: In this paper we develop a three-dimensional (3D) ray tracing tool based on the ABCD ray transfer matrices. With symmetric optical components and under paraxial approximation, two sets of 2×2 ABCD matrices, each for a two-dimensional subspace, can be used to describe the 3D ray propagation completely. Compared to commercial ray-tracing software packages, our tool requires no tedious drawing, and the results for various conditions, such as different device dimensions and incident angles, can be easily obtained … Show more

“…The distance between P B and P t is L 2 . Thus the reflected ray can be calculated by Equations (1) and (2) [ 33 ]: where α A and α B are the slopes of the ray at points P A and P B in the x direction. R x is the corresponding radius of curvature at the intersection point.…”

“…Two cylindrical microlens arrays (MLAs) are used between two field lenses. Generally, the analysis of ray propagation through MLA can be uniquely carried out by transfer matrix method or so-called ABCD matrix method [29,30]. According to the principle of image formation for paraxial rays in geometrical optics, any optical element or optical system can be described by a 2×2 ray tracing matrix.…”
