“…We define unreasonable or illogical behavior as deviation from preprogrammed behaviors and rational expectations; unresponsiveness to incentives; and/or deviation from self‐interest, self‐preservation, and/or SoS self interest and preservation . We further refine the definition of irrational system behavior in the context of this article to specifically be a failure flow class that exits a system boundary and that would not normally be anticipated through common failure analysis techniques, such as hazard analysis, FMEA and the related FMECA, PRA,FFIP, UFFSR, and other similar methods. Thus, irrational system behavior produces potential initiating events for the SoI within an SoS.…”

“…The failure flows become irrationality initiators when they encounter the SoI in the SoS. Irrationality initiators may follow nominal flow paths between systems such as a data link between two systems or irrationality initiators may affect the SoI by propagating via uncoupled flow paths . We distinguish irrationality initiators from failure flows that turn into ordinary initiating events to specifically denote that irrationality initiators are initiating events originating outside of the SoI and caused by irrational system behavior of other systems within the SoS.…”
