Modeling of Control Efforts against Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the Vector of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in Sonora Mexico

Abstract: Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a significant health problem in Sonora, Mexico. The tick vector, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, feeds almost exclusively on domestic dogs that, in this region, also serve as the reservoir for the tick-borne pathogen, Rickettsia rickettsii. A process-based mathematical model of the life cycle of R. sanguineus was developed to predict combinations of insecticidal dog collars and long-lasting insecticidal wall treatments resulting in suppression of indoor tick populations. Becaus… Show more

“…Populations in the tropics and subtropics are increasingly at risk of TBDs, which have spread nearly globally over the past few years and are considered significant risk factors affecting human and nonhuman animal health [Jaenson et al, 2012]. Ticks exhibit seasonal fluctuations in temperate zones with four distinct seasons, while tick activities are prevalent throughout the year in tropical areas [Estrada-Peña et al, 2013;Alvarez-Hernandez et al, 2022].…”

“…1 Various health agencies and institutions are currently working on the design of health promotion strategies that involve educational interventions, primarily aimed at informing communities about the importance of addressing the risk factors associated with tick borne disease (TBD) s in order to promote self-care. [2][3][4] One TBD of epidemiological importance for public health in tropical and subtropical regions, given its re-emergence, is Rickettsiosis, which involves vectors such as fleas, lice and ticks. 5 One of the most vulnerable groups and, nevertheless, one of the most important in the field of health education, are children.…”

“…The widespread nature of Rh. sanguineus s. l. on dogs and the ubiquity of dogs within human domiciles suggest that the routine surveillance of these ticks on dogs can provide useful information for both veterinary and human health risk assessments [15,30,35,37]. Here, we sampled Rh.…”
