Modeling of asymmetric membrane formation by a combination of dry/wet phase inversion processes

Abstract: The invention of asymmetric polymer membranes by Loeb and Sourirajan has caused an enormous growth in the field of membrane science and technology. Application areas range from chemical, biomedical to biotechnology industries. Asymmetric membranes are mostly fabricated by a process called phase inversion which can be achieved through four principal methods: immersion precipitation (wet phase inversion), vapor-induced phase separation, thermally induced phase separation and dry-casting. In these techniques… Show more

“…Since then, this technique has caused vigorous growth in membrane technology. In phase inversion technique, a homogenous polymer solution becomes thermo-dynamically unstable and separates between polymer-rich and polymerlean phases [59]. Recently, cellulose acetate (CA) hybrid membrane was synthesized with enhanced permeability and excellent anti-fouling property was fabricated by combination of phase inversion and chemical reaction.…”

“…The layers of composite membranes are normally made up of different materials and are prepared in different operations. The thin film composite membrane was first developed by Cadotte et al at Film Tech Co. USA during the 1970's via interfacial polymerization of two reactive monomers dissolved in two immiscible solutions on the top of polysulfone support (UF membrane) [54,55].…”

“…The process starts with polymer solution thermodynamically unstable by one of FOUR methods; immersion precipitation, vapor induced phase separation, thermally induced phase separation, and dry casting, which leads to polymer separation to polymer lean create pores and voids and polymer-rich phases the porous structure of membrane [4][5][6].
