Modeling Method and Application in Digital Mockup System towards Mechanical Product

Abstract: Abstract-The method of modeling is the key technology for digital mockup (DMU). Based upon the developing for mechanical product DMU, the theory, method and approach for virtual environment (VE) and virtual object (VO) were studied. This paper has expounded the design goal and architecture of DMU system, analyzed the method of DMU application, and researched the general process of physics modeling and behavior modeling.

“…From its beginning at the concept design phase to its use throughout the entire lifecycle of the aircraft, the DMU ensures that up to date information is accessible to all teams and individuals who are working concurrently on the program. The DMU has been defined in broader literature as a digital 3D representation of a product, its assemblies, structure and attributes -a 'virtual product reference', [6,8,9]. In the late 1980s, the Boeing Company pioneered the DMU as the major design tool during the development of their B777 aircraft [10].…”

“…5,6 Dimensional control is usually only considered when the design is complete, 7 at which stage 85% of the design’s life cycle costs have been committed as a result of decisions already made, and the cost of any further change increases exponentially. 8 With industry’s outlook of using DMUs earlier in design, giving it a new role for analysis, optimisation and simulation, 9,10 it is important to address the challenges associated with capturing usable manufacturing data in a CAD system.…”
