Modeling mangrove ‘blue carbon’ ecosystem service in Jakarta bayas an impact of coastal development

Abstract: Coastal ecosystems provide various ecosystem services in the form of natural resources, life support services, aesthetical values and comfort. The key ecosystems providing those services include estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds. Some ecosystem services provided by the key coastal ecosystems function as producers, life supporters, wave absorbers, litter provider for detritus and decomposers, and carbon cycles regulator in the ecosystem. Though their roles are vital for Jakarta bay and its surro… Show more

“…The approach to addressing the research problem is underpinned by the application of established and emerging methodologies in ecosystem service valuation and mapping. Nasir et al (2018) demonstrate the utility of these methodologies in accurately mapping and measuring water regulation services, which is crucial for effective resource management policy-making. By leveraging these methodologies, this study will utilize data integration and spatial analysis techniques to explore the heterogeneous nature of Sulawesi's landscapes and their ecological capacities.…”

“…These ecosystems, comprising mangrove trees and associated vegetation, act as a vital carbon preservers by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and retaining it within their biomass and sediments [6]. Mangrove plants possess the ability to sequester carbon at rates several times higher than terrestrial forests, making them crucial allies in climate change mitigation efforts [7].…”

“…Ecosystem services are the contribution of various interrelated ecological structures and functions, mangrove ecosystems provide ecosystem services as organisms that are able to maintain the carbon cycle (Sudirman et al, 2018). According to (MEA, 2005), ecosystem services are defined into four basic categories, namely provision, regulation, culture and support.…”
