RESUMONo semiárido brasileiro, a pequena agricultura familiar constitui suporte financeiro a pequenas comunidades rurais mas, em decorrência do elevado déficit hídrico o manejo de irrigação é de grande importância e a modelagem numérica se destaca como ferramenta para avaliação prévia do desempenho das práticas potenciais no controle da salinização. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho do modelo SALTMED na predição da umidade e salinidade no perfil do solo em área cultivada com repolho, nas profundidades de 20 e 40 cm e frequências de irrigação de 12, 24 e 48 h. O modelo foi calibrado e validado com observações diárias medidas em campo considerando-se aspectos dos recursos naturais (solo e água), clima, cultura e sistema de irrigação. A calibração foi efetuada para parcela com frequência de irrigação de 24 h e a validação com frequências de 12 e 48 h em Neossolo no município de Pesqueira, PE. O modelo foi calibrado adequadamente e validado para todas as profundidades podendo ser utilizado para análise do manejo integrado que maximize o rendimento do cultivo de repolho, em áreas semelhantes e com risco de salinização. Palavras ABSTRACTIn the Brazilian semi-arid region, small scale agriculture constitutes financial support for small rural communities. However, due to the high water deficit, irrigation management is of high importance for the development of the agriculture, and numerical modeling is an useful tool towards evaluating in advance the performance of practical techniques for salinization control. Thus, the objective of this study was to apply the SALTMED model to simulate soil moisture and salinity in a soil profile cropped with cabbage, at 20 cm and 40 cm depths under irrigation frequencies of 12, 24 and 48 hours. The model was calibrated and validated using daily field observations, considering the natural resources aspects (soil and water), climate, crop, and irrigation system. The experiment with the irrigation frequency of 24 hours was used for calibration, while the experiments with irrigation frequencies of 12 and 48 hours were used for validation in area with Neosol, in the Municipal District of Pesqueira-PE. The model was properly calibrated and validated for all depths, and it can be used for analysing integrated management which maximizes cabbage response in similar areas and under salinization risk.

We investigated the degradation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) in soil by two cyanobacteria isolates Anabaena variabilis N 21 and Nostoc calcicola N 25 under high concentrations of NaCl. After four months of incubation cultures in saline soils with 4% NaCl decreased HCH concentrations considerably from 2 µg/g soil to 14 ng/g soil, representing 1% of the introduced HCH. In pure cultures 1 M NaCl was not lethal but significantly changed the morphology of the cyanobacteria. Enzyme assays for aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase indicated the overexpression of xanthine oxidase in Nostoc calcicola N25 under salt-stress. Our results indicate that the strains can be used as biopreparations for bioremediation of salt-affected soils polluted with persistent chlororganic compounds often found in Uzbekistan soils.

a b s t r a c tGroundwater is an important factor that needs to be considered when evaluating the water balance of the soil-plant-atmosphere system and the sustainable development of arid oases. However, the impact of shallow groundwater on the root zone water balance and cotton growth is not fully understood. In this study, we have first analyzed the influence of the groundwater table depth on the seasonal maximum leaf area index of cotton, the average seasonal water stress, cotton yield, actual transpiration, actual evaporation, and capillary rise using experimental data collected at the Aksu water balance station, in Xinjiang, northwest of China and the Hydrus-1D variably-saturated soil water flow model coupled with a simplified crop growth model from SWAT. The coupled model has been first calibrated and validated using field observations of soil water content, leaf area index, cotton height, the above ground biomass, and cotton yield comparisons between measured and modeled variables have shown a reasonable agreement for all variables. Additionally, with a validated model, we have carried out numerical experiments from which we have concluded that groundwater is a major water resource for cotton growth in this region. The capillary rise from groundwater contributes almost 23% of crop transpiration when the average groundwater depth is 1.84 m, which is the most suitable groundwater depth for this experimental site. We have concluded that cotton growth and various components of the soil water balance are highly sensitive to the groundwater table level. Different positions of the groundwater table showed both positive and negative effects on cotton growth. Likewise, cotton growth has a significant impact on the capillary rise from groundwater. As a result, groundwater is a crucial factor that needs to be considered when evaluating agricultural land management in this arid region. The updated Hydrus-1D model developed in this study provides a powerful modeling tool for evaluating the effects of the groundwater table on local land management.
