Modeling human factors influencing herding during evacuation

Abstract: Purpose-It has been witnessed that many incidents of crowd evacuation have resulted in catastrophic results, claiming lives of hundreds of people. Most of these incidents were a result of localized herding that eventually turned into global panic. Many crowd evacuation models have been proposed with different aspects of interests. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to bring together many of these aspects to study evacuation dynamics. Design/methodology/approach-The proposed agent-based model, in a hypothe… Show more

“…Richardson (1994) explained that the crowd needs an understanding of sequences of disaster, triggering events and their coupling causes. Some more literature reviewed includes swarm behaviour in emergency situations (Beltaief et al, 2017); herding behaviour of a crowd (Zafar et al, 2017); human movement in crowds (Mohamaddan and Case, 2016). Xing et al (2017) observed that female passengers probably involved in escalator-related injuries than male.…”

“…The research conducted by Bledaa and Shackley [7] is more related to this work. It used ABM for studying the establishment of risk perceptions-one of the well-known models, social and theory-driven in nature, which is widely studied [19][20][21][22]. Many simulation models targeting different domains have been developed, such as the one recently developed by Ge et al [23] for the supply chain management.…”

“…A general overview of applications of modeling and simulation to solve real life problem is presented by Ipek Bozkurt and Jose J. Padilla [16] focused on Epistemological, Ontological, Teleological and Methodological themes. More related to the our research is the work of Mercedes Bledaa and Simon Shackley [17] using agent-based simulation to study formation of risk perceptions; one of the many social theory driven models which have been simulated [18][19][20][21]. Additionally, in systems, many simulation models are proposed i.e., recent model of supply-chain proposed by Houtian Ge, et.…”
