Modeling Creep Relaxation of Polytetrafluorethylene Gaskets for Finite Element Analysis

Abstract: Abstract-A typical flange joint consists of one or more gaskets to arrest the leak between the two ends. The important requirements of such gasket is its durability and sealing capacity during its service under operational loads. Many materials qualify for sealing purpose but, Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) gaskets have a very high durability and can be used due to its chemical inertness. However, a PTFE gasket will not maintain a long-term seal capability. Once compressed, PTFE gradually relaxes over a period … Show more

“…The modulus of elasticity vs time graphs for all reinforcements in the alkali medium are shown in Fig. (11). The composite with 0.8 wt.% had a higher percentage of modulus of elasticity in the alkali medium compared with other weight fractions, recording a 2.32 % improvement in modulus of elasticity as compared with pure polyester.…”

“…It's a good term for the first two stages of creep, namely decelerated and equivelocity creep. Visco-elastic materials, like the polyester composites, may be studied using the Burgers model in order to identify their stress or strain relations as well as their time dependencies [10].…”

“…In many cases, the viscoelastic parameters that are determined geometrically from the creep curve by taking strain rates at t = 0 and t = ∞ lack accuracy. The linear viscoelastic parameter analyses are discussed for different materials (Keenan et al 2013;Ngudiyono et al 2019;Bharadwaj et al 2017). The FE studies by Ngudiyono et al (2019) and Bharadwaj et al (2017) used the Prony series to model the time-dependent shear moduli of the materials.…”
