The context-aware services require to efficiently perceive not only the user requirements but also the context of the environment to provide customized services to the user. To efficiently develop the context-aware applications a systematic methodology correctly specifying the relation among dynamically changing contexts is essential. Here the context model simplifying the manipulation of complex contexts is a key accessor for the specification and analysis of the service. Among various modeling approaches such as timed automata (Tang and You in Intell Automat Soft Comput 16 (4):605-619, 2010), workflow (Rosemann et al. in Understanding context-awareness in business process design, 2010), Petri net (PN) (Jørgensen et al. in Innovat Syst Softw Eng 5(1):13-25, 2009), etc.developed for context-aware system, the PN-based approach has been recognized as one of the most effective one. In this paper we identify the issues of how the contexts are modeled and what kinds of the requirements needs to be considered in the context processing. We then discuss various Petri net (PN)-based modeling methodologies concerning the five important features for context processing: relationships and dependencies, time constraint, resource constraint, usability of modeling formalisms, and context identification. The study reveals that the approach effectively allowing both the time and resource constraints in the model while supporting other important properties needs to be developed further for accurately assess the context-aware systems. Also, the expandability and scalability issue need to be investigated.

In the past few years, the advances in context aware systems and sensor technologies, has elevated the Internet of Things (loT) development greatly and rather quickly. Services ofIoT systems must be reasonably designed to provide not only the user's requirements and requests, but also perceive the environmental context and customized services to get user's satisfaction. Systematic modeling methodologies are essential to control the correctness of the services and the systems behaviors among dynamic changing contexts. The presented solution will be a novel loT framework, "CANthings" (Context-Aware Networks for the Design of Connected Things) to identify loT needs.This paper mainly promotes and analyzes an loT system modeling methodology based on Timed Colored Petri Net (TCPN) to check the effectiveness of the provided services in the CANthings framework. Our goal is to present a standard solution that can be used in high-technical research and industrial projects.

Effective manipulation of context is very important in providing the context-aware services. In recent years, a variety of context models have been proposed to p roperly handle the key aspects of the context, while focusing on scenario-based acquisition, management, and representation of context. However, they are difficult to be employed for the agent-based system requiring distributed reasoning. In this paper we propose a context modeling approach for distributed reasoning and merge operator reflecting the perspective of constituent agents for rational reasoning. In addition, an agent-based context-aware system is developed implementing the proposed scheme. Performance evaluation by computer simulation on a use case of smart classroom shows that the proposed approach enables the agents to rationally reason and thereby provide intelligent context -aware services to the users.
