Modeling and validation of a flywheel energy storage lab-setup

Abstract: Abstract-This work deals with the modeling, control and experimental validation of a flywheel test bench which is part of IREC's lab-scale microgrid. The storage device has been designed as a proof of concept. It is based on a low-speed rotating disk mechanically coupled to a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine. The electrical power is exchanged with the external grid by means of a set of back-to-back power converters. These power electronics control the speed of the machine, and thus the active power absorbe… Show more

“…In this section we consider the availability of lithium batteries for the consumers. Batteries may help consumers in smoothing their consumption from peak time to other hours of the day (Schroeder (2011) and Díaz-González et al (2012)), leading to an electricity system where increasingly the "demand follows generation". We investigate how storage and interconnection between Ireland and France affect the welfare changes in these two countries and how these investments interact.…”

“…Moreover, they can also take up the role of spinning reserve and provide energy for a black start, load leveling, ride through support, and unbalanced load compensation. The application of FESS in power systems is commonly investigated in association with grid-connected wind farms [4]- [8] for smoothing power oscillations generated by wind oscillation, or in a low-inertia microgrid [9]- [11]. FESSs have also been used for voltage sag mitigation in a shipboard power system [12].…”
