Modeling and Flowsheet Simulation of Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryers

Abstract: Drying in fluidized beds is an important step in the production of powdered materials. Especially in the food and pharmaceutical industry, fluidized bed dryers are often vibrated to improve the drying process. In the current work, a continuous fluidized bed drying model is implemented in the novel, open-source flowsheet simulation framework Dyssol. The new model accounts for the hydrodynamic characteristics of all Geldart groups as well as the impact of mechanical vibration on the drying process. Distributed p… Show more

“…They apply such techniques for raw materials that do not contain nutrients that need to be preserved. Another way to increase the amount of solids in the feedstock is the operation of preliminary evaporation of the liquid, followed by drying the condensed raw materials [11]. This technique entails additional energy costs for the evaporation process, which reduces its economic attractiveness.…”

“…The development and applications of computational tools were discussed in various papers [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Fluidized bed hydrodynamics and heat transfer were computationally investigated in [6] by a Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) model.…”

“…Macroscopic modeling was used in [12] to predict the performances of vibrated fluidized bed dryers under a broad set of different conditions, demonstrating the significant progress of flowsheeting simulators in representing complex fluidized bed process units. In particular, a continuous dryer model was implemented and tested within the opensource framework Dyssol, accounting for the fluidization hydrodynamics of particles of all Geldart's groups, including the effect of vibration.…”
