Modeling and Estimating Current Harmonics of Variable Electronic Loads

Abstract: This paper develops a model for relating input current harmonic content to real power consumption for variable electronic loads, specifically for loads' actively controlled inverters energized by an uncontrolled rectification of the utility. This model serves as the basis for a method for estimating and disaggregating the power consumption of variable speed drives (VSDs) and rectifier loads from other constant power loads. This method can be used for nonintrusive power monitoring. The approach described in thi… Show more

“…This can capture the steady-state and transient characteristics of the diode bridge rectifier. An approximate switching function of the diode bridge rectifier is used in order to obtain the estimating function for the fundamental current harmonics [4].This method is proven to be effective in finding out the input current harmonic content. A switching function model for voltage source inverter is derived and also it is validated using MATLAB/Simulink [5].…”

“…In earlier charging stations, which used passive power factor correction rectifiers [13][14][15], it was difficult to reduce the harmonics from the charger. Active power filters (APF) can be used in a charging station to compensate for the harmonics produced by the nonlinear loads.…”

“…Harmonic distortion will occur in the voltage and current on the AC (Alternating Current) side of the charging station because of the coupling between the rectifier and the power grid. The existing literature on this topic has mainly employed experimental testing [2,5] and simulation analysis [14,15]. However, the former method is only applicable to charging facilities under experimental conditions.…”

“…At a particular site, these harmonics may be uniquely associated with the VSD and can be used to estimate the fundamental current harmonic and the power consumption of the VSD accurately using a data-driven model [6]. The estimating function based on empirical data is sensitive to changes in the environment such as input voltage harmonics [7]. An alternative estimator was developed by modeling and analyzing the behavior of the internal circuit of the VSD, specifically the uncontrolled three-phase rectifier [7].…”

An alternative estimator was developed by modeling and analyzing the behavior of the internal circuit of the VSD, specifically the uncontrolled three-phase rectifier [7]. The model-based estimator solves the issue of the input voltage distortions, enhancing the robustness of the estimator.…”
