Abstract. At the present there is a high pressure toward the improvement of all production processes. Those improvements can target distinct factors along the production chain. In particular, and due to recent tight energy efficiency policies, those that involve energy efficiency. As can be expected, agricultural processes are not immune to this tendency. Even more when dealing with indoor productions. In this context, this work presents an innovative system that aims to improve the energy efficiency of a trees growing platform. This improvement in energy consumption is accomplished by replacing an electric heating system by one based on thermodynamic panels. The assessment of the heating fluid caudal and its temperature was experimentally obtained by means of a custom made scaled prototype whose actuators status are commanded by a Fuzzy-based controller. The obtained results suggest that the change in the heating paradigm will lead to overall savings that can easily reach 60% on the energy bill.

Abstract-A low-temperature heating system is studied in this paper. It consists of hydronic under-floor heating pipes and an air/ground source heat pump. The heat pump in such a setup is conventionally controlled only by feed-forwarding the ambient temperature. Having shown >10% cut-down on electricity bills by involving feedback control in a previous study, this paper has continued the same line of argument and has investigated effects of a priori knowledge on weather forecast and electricity price profile to alleviate the total electricity cost subject to constraints on resident's thermal comfort. A two level hierarchical control structure is chosen for this purpose. While local PI controllers at the bottom level maintain individual temperature set-points of the rooms, a model predictive controller at the top level minimizes water supply temperature, and hence maximizes the heat pump's coefficient of performance. At the same time, it determines the actual temperature set-points of the rooms by deviating from the user-defined set-points within a thermal tolerance zone. Simulations results confirm significant cut-down on electricity bills without sacrificing resident thermal comfort. The proposed control strategy is a leap forward towards balanced load control in Smart Grids where individual heat pumps in detached houses contribute to preserve load balance through intelligent electricity pricing policies.

Abstract-The extensive growth of installed wind energy plants in Denmark leads to increasing balancing problems in the power grid due to the nature of wind fields and variations in consumption. One way to overcome these problems is to move consumption to times where wind power otherwise cause overproduction. A part of a solution can be to take advantage of floor heat capacity in single-family houses using heat pumps. This large heat capacity makes it possible to move consumption without compromising the comfort of house residents. In a Danish research project a virtual power plant using centralized control of a large number of houses with heat pumps is established. In order to make the control algorithm a vital part is a dynamic model of each house. The model predicts the house indoor temperature when heat pump power and outdoor temperature is known. The model must be able to describe a large variety of heat pumps and houses. In the paper a house model and a method to identify the model is presented. The Kalman observer models are optimized using measurements from real houses.
