Efficacious product development is a critical issue faced by medical device manufacturing industries. Indian medical device industry is in nascent stage constituting of 75 % imports indicating diminutive device development activities unlike other sectors of manufacturing which are vigorously making forays through indigenous product development. The objective of this paper is to identify barriers to medical device development (MDD) and develop a structural model of it. 11 most significant barriers are identified using opinions of MDD experts and the literature review. They are further ranked by 33 experts through questionnaire survey. The mutual relationships among the barriers are established based on opinions of one group of experts using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach. The barriers are quantified using reachability matrix and further categorised as: autonomous, dependent, linkage and driver barriers using MICMAC analysis based on the mutual influence and dependence. The model is further validated by another group of MDD experts. Combination of ISM and MIC-MAC analysis gives a high level contextual relationship among the barriers identified. The barriers have compounding effect. Dependent barriers have higher dependence and present resulting actions. The driver barriers have high driving power and low dependence indicating need for systematic plan of action. Identification of barriers to MDD and developing the contextual relationships among them is a unique effort. It will provide an aid to the top management, developers and policy makers to develop strategies for MDD. Moreover, it will assist to accelerate indigenous contribution towards MDD which will ultimately deepen the penetration of low cost and better quality medical care for larger part of the population. This paper develops a model of barriers to MDD in India; which can be customised for other sectors and contexts.

Despite of increasing availability of open data as a vital organizational resource, large numbers of startups and organizations fail when it comes to utilizing open data effectively. This shortcoming is attributable to the poor understanding of what types of capabilities are required to successfully conduct data related activities. At the same time, research on open data capabilities and how they relate to one another remains sparse. Guided by extant literature, interviews of these organizations, and drawn from Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) approach which are pair comparison methods to evolve hierarchical relationships among a set of elements to convert unclear and unstructured mental models of systems into well-articulated models that act as base for conceptualization and theory building, this study explores open data capabilities and the relationships and the structure of the dependencies among these areas. Findings from this study reveal hitherto unknown knowledge regarding how the capability areas relate one another in these organizations. From the practical standpoint, the resulting architecture has the potential to transform capability management practices in open data organizations towards greater competitiveness through more flexibility and increased value generation. From the research point of you, this paper motivates theory development in this discipline.

Code smells are the faults in design that reduces the code maintainability. It is essential to identify and control these code smells during the design and development stages of enterprise application implementation in order to achieve higher code maintainability and quality. This research paper presents a framework that engages in modelling and measuring various code smells so that practitioners can focus their efforts on most critical code smells and thus achieve higher code maintainability and quality. The framework uses Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM) for modelling and structuring various code smells. TISM helps in identifying Interrelationship among these code smells. Using MICMAC analysis, these code smells are classified into four clusters based on their driving power and dependence power. Two-way assessment helps in measuring the code smells by deriving the utility measure based on the expert opinion of two set of stakeholders. An experiment is conducted on an enterprise application project and code smells are measured using two-way assessment. It is demonstrated that the code smells having high driving power are optimized which resulted in the elevation of the overall code maintainability of the enterprise applications. The proposed framework optimizes the process of enhancing the overall code maintainability by identification of most critical code smells having higher driving power and then optimizing them.
