Modeling and analysis of FMS flexibility factors by TISM and fuzzy MICMAC

Abstract: To increase the manufacturing flexibility, manufacturing organizations are looking at flexible manufacturing system (FMS) as a viable alternative to enhance their competitive edge. There are, however, some factors which affect the flexibility of FMS. Fifteen factors are identified from the literature and found their evaluation by interpretive structural modeling (ISM), exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and graph theory matrix approach. But, Interpretation of the mutual relationship of f… Show more

“…It represents complex system in a visual hierarchical structure (Chang et al 2013;Borade and Bansod 2012) and transforms unclear, poorly articulated mental models of a system into visible, well defined hierarchical models (Alawamleh and Popplewell 2011;Jain and Raj 2015;Sindhwani and Malhotra 2016). ISM is primarily as a group learning process as interrelations among variables under study are decided based on group judgement (Gothwal and Raj 2015), but individuals may also apply it (Ravi and Shankar 2005;Faisal et al 2007).…”

“…For modeling our dependency structure of different open data capability areas, we adopted ISM methodology. ISM is one of the most popular techniques for identifying and understanding mutual relationship among the elements or variables of a particular context [34] and is able to uncover hidden relationships between elements far more accurately than individual's experiences. Because people are limited in their ability to address complex issues involving a significant number of elements at one time, the use of ISM can advance the collective understanding of such relationships [35].…”

“…It is used to establish dependencies among elements and to develop a dependency structure of a set of elements. Followings are the steps for ISM methodology as discussed by Sushil [30][15], Jain and Raj [34] and Sindhwani and Malhotra [36].…”

“…TISM is used to identify the structural model that depicts the relationship between various code smells (Jain and Raj 2015). MICMAC analysis is used to categorize various code smells into four clusters namely Independent, Linkage, Autonomous and Dependent (Gandhi 2015).…”
