Modeling and Analysis Of Digital Optical Communications Systems

Abstract: This article reviews the modeling and operation of digital optical communications systems focusing on the description of fundamental physical principles and their mathematical representation. It covers issues related to optical amplification and noise, detection and estimation of error‐rates, propagation in optical fibers in the presence of dispersion and nonlinear effects and includes a brief introduction to polarization related phenomena.
