How does AirBnb affect local Spanish tourism markets?

This paper analyses the effects of AirBnb on the size of local tourism markets using AirBnb occupancy rates and hotel overnight stays in order to explore the causal relationship in several Spanish cities. A dynamic panel data model is applied at the city level (2014–2017). Our findings show a positive relationship between the increase in the number of properties offered on AirBnb and the implicit volume of tourists received by each city, specifically in two large cities (Madrid and Barcelona), due to higher AirBnb occupancy rate.

Sharing economy has become a rather troublesome concept and business model in the process of tourism development during the recent years. Despite its undoubtful economic benefits for service providers and consumers, there are numerous negative impacts which can be related to the sharing economy, ultimately leading to unsustainable tourism development on destination level. In general, sharing economy can be attributed numerous benefits, but in terms of tourism, it recently became closely related to the issue of overtourism, thus becoming one of the initiators of negative attitude of the local community towards the future tourism development. Therefore, the concept of sharing economy has been in the focus of numerous researchers during the last several years, with increasing number of papers being published since 2016. This research is focused on analyzing the evolution and importance of sharing economy within the tourism study. The focus is given to the bibliographic analysis of journal articles within the “sharing economy in tourism” search. Additionally, based on qualitative content analysis the aim is to identify current state of the research in this field and to determine research gap with respect to the issue of overtourism and to identify future research potentials.

In this paper, we analyse the long-run equilibrium demand of the peer-to-peer sharing economy. Our panel data demand model relates occupancy rates to relative prices of Airbnb and HomeAway listings, prices of competitors (hotels and apartments) and a proxy for income of tourists visiting the Canary Islands (Spain). We use a fractional heterogeneous panel data model which allows for a more general persistence and cointegration relationship and incorporates individual and interactive fixed effects. We find some evidence for (fractional) cointegration in P2P at the listing level. Regarding elasticities, classic cointegration methods give larger estimates for individual slopes and mean group coefficients than the fractional integrated heterogeneous model. Finally, own-price elasticities are inelastic, and the cross-price elasticity indicates that P2P listings and hotels are substitute goods. Income elasticity is lower than 1 and is not statistically significant, indicating that the demand for tourism in the Canary Islands is not sensitive to the economic conditions in the origin countries.
