In Model Driven Engineering (Mde), models are first-class citizens, and model transformation is Mde's "heart and soul". Since model transformations are executed for a family of (conforming) models, their validity becomes a crucial issue.This paper proposes to explore the question of the formal verification of model transformation properties through a tridimensional approach: the transformation involved, the properties of interest addressed, and the formal verification techniques used to establish the properties.This work is intended for a double audience. For newcomers, it provides a tutorial introduction to the field of formal verification of model transformations. For readers more familiar with formal methods and model transformations, it proposes a literature review (although not systematic) of the contributions of the field.Overall, this work allows to better understand the evolution, trends and current practice in the domain of model transformation verification. This work opens an interesting research line for building an engineering of model transformation verification guided by the notion of model transformation intent.

Abstract. As model transformations become more complex and more central to software development, reuse mechanisms become more important to enable effective and efficient development of high-quality transformations. A number of transformation-reuse mechanisms have been proposed, but so far there have been no effective attempts at evaluating the quality of reuse that can be achieved by these approaches. In this paper, we build on our earlier work on transformation intents and propose a systematic approach for analyzing the soundness and completeness of a given transformation reuse mechanism with respect to the preservation of transformation intent. We apply this approach to analyze transformation-reuse mechanisms currently proposed in the literature and show that these mechanisms are not sound or complete. We show why providing sound transformation reuse mechanisms is a hard problem, but provide some evidence that by limiting ourselves to specific families of transformations and modeling languages the problem can be simplified. As a result of our exploration, we propose a new research agenda into the development of sound (and possibly complete) transformation reuse mechanisms.

Model transformations are an important cornerstone of model‐driven engineering, a discipline which facilitates the abstraction of relevant information of a system as models. The success of the final system mainly depends on the optimization of these models through model transformations. Currently, the application of transformations is realized either by following the apply‐as‐long‐as‐possible strategy or by the provision of explicit rule orchestrations. This implies two main limitations. First, the optimization objectives are implicitly hidden in the transformation rules and their orchestration. Second, manually finding the best orchestration for a particular scenario is a major challenge due to the high number of possible combinations. To overcome these limitations, we present a novel framework that builds on the non‐intrusive integration of optimization and model transformation technologies. In particular, we formulate the transformation orchestration task as an optimization problem, which allows for the efficient exploration of the transformation space and explication of the transformation objectives. Our generic framework provides several search algorithms and guides the user in providing a proper search configuration. We present different instantiations of our framework to demonstrate its feasibility, applicability, and benefits using several case studies. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
