Model tests of dynamic ice loading on the Chinese JZ-20-2 jacket platform

Abstract: A model test program has been performed to study the dynamic ice loads on a jacket platform used in Bohai Bay, China. The tests were performed at a geometric scale factor of 1:26. The prototype structure/foundation compliance was modelled and the structure was subjected to scaled ice sheets corresponding to the ice conditions in the Bohai Bay. The loads, moments, displacements, and accelerations of the structure were measured. The test variables include the ice thickness, ice speed, elevation of ice cover, and… Show more

“…In these investigations, the rigid structure on compliant foundation Timco et al, 1992Timco et al, , 1995 and the fully elastic structure (Cornett and Timco, 1998;Timco et al, 1997) were often adopted. In the tests with the compliant model or foundation, the coupling effect of structure response on ice force was the main consideration factor.…”

“…First, the research tests were mainly used to analyze the influences of some parameters onr ice load or to establish the application models of ice load. Second, the design tests were mainly used to analyze the ice loads on specific structures in structure design, risk analysis, safety evaluation, and other applications Timco et al, 1992Timco et al, , 1995Timco et al, , 1997. Cold Regions Science and Technology 120 (2015) 21-29 In this paper, laboratory tests on cones were performed at two scale factors of 6 and 3 in the ice tank of the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA).…”

“…If an assessment index system is established based on the risk assessment theory, the safety level of various structures and the risk level of structural operation can be quickly assessed. Therefore, a structural risk assessment index system can be used as a basis for the more efficient and accurate structural safety analysis (Mangalathu et al, 2017;Melani et al, 2016;Sparks et al, 1994;Tromans and van de Graaf, 1994;Wang et al, 2012;Wu et al, 2012).…”

“…On 28 January 2000, the JZ20-2 MS platform suffered from severe steady-state vibration due to the actions of level ice, causing a fatigue fracture in the evacuation pipeline of the No. 8 well, natural gas leakage, and platform suspension (Yue et al, 2009;Li et al, 2008;Timco et al, 2011). Since 2010, the aquaculture area affected by sea ice disasters has reached 40,000 ha per year (State Oceanic Administration, 2017).…”
