Model Simplification on Energy and Comfort Simulation Analysis for Residential Building Design in Hot and Arid Climate

Abstract: Accurate building physics performance analysis requires time-consuming, detailed modeling, and calculation time requirement. This paper evaluates the impact of model simplifications on thermal and visual comfort as well as energy performance. In the framework of dynamic zonal thermal simulation, a case study of a residential building in hot climate is investigated. A detailed model is created and simplified through four scenarios, by incrementally reducing the number of thermal zones from modeling every space … Show more

“…72 Although there is the adoption of a simplified model with only one thermal zone, 29 simplified scenarios may present deviations up to 20%. 73 This deviation happens due to high exposure to solar radiation on all facades, which does not happen often in reality. Thus, five thermal zones were created: living room/kitchen, bedroom 1, bedroom 2 and the attic.…”

“…Currently, all advanced countries focused on building energy problems in different ways to use energy rationally and to preserve it is sources [10]. The building sector has consumed 40% of total energy and natural resources likewise it is the main source of about 40-70% of CO 2 emissions globally [11][12][13]. Although fossil fuel is a prevalent source of energy in KRI by 85% [14] however, there is still a shortage in supplied electricity for instance, Duhok City in 2018 has simply 13 h per day from the national electricity [15].…”

“…It is situated, at about 245 km south of Cairo, on the west side of the Nile River. Minia reported being one of North Upper Egypt's climate regions, situated between Longitudes 30° 45'1.08′′ E and Latitudes 28° 6'35.57 "N, and has been considered a desert area [Elhadad, 2020]. To analyze the relationship between the environment and the most suitable building comfort design strategies in Minia, the paper adopts the evaluating design strategies based on Mahoney tables using the case study meteorological data [Mcintyre, 1980, Markus et al, 1980.…”
