Model of the function of the neostriatum and its neuronal activity during behavior in monkeys

Abstract: Experiments with simultaneous recording of six neostriatum neurons showed that the neurons of this structure are involved in the organization of all stages of behavior. A defined combination of neuronal activity corresponded to each action of the animal. The responses of individual neostriatal neurons were not entirely determined by the action being carried out at a particular moment, but reflected a wider aspect of the overall activity of the animal. These data, along with the established properties of neuron… Show more

“…These experiments are in agreement with previously reported data [10,11] indicating that the neostriatum is not characterized by functional specialization of particular neurons within it. The distribution of reactions across different steps of the complex behavioral program provides evidence that the function of individual pu-tamen neurons is not linked to any specific type of activity performed by the animal, but appears during the creation of individual mosaics of neuron activity with qualitatively different integral sensitivity to ongoing moments of behavior, which is needed for forming a space-time continuum of behavior.…”
