Model of Human Occupation as a framework for implementation of Motivational Interviewing in occupational rehabilitation

Abstract: BACKGROUND: A conceptual framework is needed to understand injured workers' decision-making and inform evidencebased interventions to address behavior change regarding return-to-work (RTW). The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) can help with understanding how an injured worker's characteristics can generate behavior change while Motivational Interviewing (MI) can help facilitate behavior change. OBJECTIVE: This theoretical paper provides an overview of how MOHO and MI can be applied and integrated in occupation… Show more

“…In the MI sessions in the current study, the sick-listed workers received personal feedback about their presented RTW plan, such as adjusting their RTW pace, workload, work tasks, and working time. The role of a MI practitioner is not to provide answers and solutions to the client, but to recognize and support the client's insights and capabilities of providing solutions to his or her own challenges [43]. Hence, when the sick-listed workers in the current study perceived RTW adjustments as positive and useful, it is based on insights and reflections from the sick-listed worker, that were elicited, reflected, and summarized by the MI caseworker.…”

“…Occupational therapy can visualise the limitations and strengths of patients as a whole. To achieve this, several theoretical models are employed, with three of them being particularly prominent: the biomechanical framework, 11 the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), 10 and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) 13 . The first two mentioned are considered the most suitable options for occupational therapy in the context of our interest, haemophilia.…”

“…Na delovanje vseh treh konceptov človeka vpliva tudi okolje s svojimi dejavniki (Park idr., 2019). Fizično okolje velikokrat predstavlja oviro za osebe z določeno okvaro (Kielhofner, 2008).…”
