The study adopts a data reduction technique to examine the presence of any complex structure among a set of project management competency variables. A structured survey questionnaire was administered to 100 project managers to elicit relevant data, and this achieved a relatively high response rate of 54%. After satisfying all the necessary tests of reliability of the survey instrument, sample size adequacy and population matrix, the data was subjected to principal component analysis, resulting in the identification of six new thematic project management competency areas; and were explained in terms of human resource management and project control; construction innovation and communication; project financial resources management; project risk and quality management; business ethics and; physical resources and procurement management. These knowledge areas now form the basis for lateral project management training requirements in the context of the Ghanaian construction industry. The main contribution of the paper is manifested in the use of the principal component analysis, which has rigorously provided an understanding into the complex structure and the relationship between the various knowledge areas. The originality and value of the paper is embedded in the use of contextual-task and conceptual knowledge to expound the six uncorrelated empirical utility of the project management competencies.

Contractors working with the Public sector encounter numerous challenges in financing projects in Ghana. The challenges which have persisted over the years are both financial and managerial. This paper seeks to ascertain the extent to which contractors' challenges in acquiring funds to execute public sector projects have been solved. The study involved both qualitative and quantitative methods to ascertain the various strategies the contractors go through to obtain public sector projects focusing on the challenges associated with the project execution. The study revealed that delayed payments and inadequate cash flow on the part of government, lack of credit worthiness and inadequate collateral security from contractors are key determinants to challenges associated with financing public sector projects in Ghana. This paper recommends the establishment of a Construction Development Authority (CDA), within the Ministry of Works and Housing to develop financial plans, policies and laws for this important sector of the economy.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the intrinsic relationships among sets of quantity surveyors' skill and competence variables with a view to reducing them into principal components. The research adopts a data reduction technique using factor analysis statistical technique. A structured questionnaire was administered among major stakeholders in the Nigerian construction industry. The respondents were asked to give rating, on a 5 point Likert scale, on skills and competencies required of quantity surveyors. Based on the 21 skills and 15 competencies areas, factor analysis was used to explore and detect the underlying relationship among the identified variables. Important measures, such as Bartlett's test of sphericity, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling accuracy and measure of sampling adequacy were used to test the appropriateness of the factor extraction. The data reduction results in the identification of 5 skill components: managerial, technical, investment and global marketing, information and communication technology and professional practice skills; and 3 competence components: project management, valuation and dispute resolution and cost planning and control. The reduced principal components could serve as a guiding framework for training and distilling the required skills and competencies for quantity surveyors especially in Nigeria working environment. The originality and value of the paper is demonstrated in the use of factor analysis in reducing the complex and multiple categorizations of quantity surveyors' skills and competencies into clearly defined principal components.
