Graphical User Interface (GUI) design is currently shifting from designing GUIs composed of standard widgets to designing GUIs relying on more natural interactions and ad hoc widgets. This shift is meant to support the advent of GUIs providing users with more adapted and natural interactions, and the support of new input devices such as multi-touch screens. Standard widgets (e.g. buttons) are more and more replaced by ad hoc ones (e.g. the drawing area of graphical editors), and interactions are shifting from mono-event (e.g. button pressures) to multi-event interactions (e.g. multi-touch and gesture-based interactions). As a consequence, the current GUI model-based testing approaches, which target event-based systems, show their limits when applied to test such new advanced GUIs. The work introduced in this paper establishes three contributions: a precise analysis of the reasons of these current limits; a proposition to tackle the identified limits by leveraging the Malai GUI specification language and by proposing the concept of interaction-action-flow graph; feedback from two use cases, an industrial project and an open-source application, where the proposed approach has been applied.

Use cases models are used to specifying functional requirements whereas task models are employed to modeling UI requirements. Test cases generated from use cases models are focused on the core functionality of the system, while test cases generated from task models are used to user interface testing which concerned with details of user interactions. Therefore, test cases derived from use case models or task models only capture partial system behavior .These test cases are inadequate for testing full system behavior.In this paper we employ use cases models for modeling system functionality and user action notation (UAN) for describing user interfaces. We assumed that the task model and use case model are consistent and they refined each other in some part of model. Use case models and task models are transformed to FSM respectively. We propose a method for formally integrating the model for use case models and task models. The resulting integrated model is then used to generate test cases which capture more complete and detailed user interactions and secondary system interactions.

This paper provides a retrospective examination of GUI Ripping-reverse engineering a workflow model of the graphical user interface of a software application-born a decade ago out of recognition of the severe need for improving the then largely manual state-of-the-practice of functional GUI testing. In these last 10 years, GUI ripping has turned out to be an enabler for much research, both within our group at Maryland and other groups. Researchers have found new and unique applications of GUI ripping, ranging from measuring human performance to re-engineering legacy user interfaces. GUI ripping has also enabled large-scale experimentation involving millions of test cases, thereby helping to understand the nature of GUI faults and characteristics of test cases to detect them. It has resulted in large multi-institutional Government-sponsored research projects on test automation and benchmarking. GUI ripping tools have been ported to many platforms, including Java AWT and Swing, iOS, Android, UNO, Microsoft Windows, and web. In essence, the technology has transformed the way researchers and practitioners think about the nature of GUI testing, no longer considered a manual activity; rather, thanks largely to GUI Ripping, automation has become the primary focus of current GUI testing techniques.
