Many stroke patients nowadays prefer home rehabilitation, which limits their access to proper rehabilitation equipment, treatment, or assessment by therapists. Currently, the rehabilitation programs neglect to maintain a patient's motivation in doing rehabili tation exercises. The programs also lack a monitoring system to evaluate the patients' performance quantitatively although this is the most cru cial element in rehabilitation. In order to solve these problems, we have developed a novel measurement system for upper limb motor disorder rehabilitation using an optical sensor. This system consists of an optical sensor device, a personal computer and a computerized calculated program for upper limb locus position. The optical sensor detects the user's motions and calculates position and velocity. The sanding block position, velocity and the motion length of the block during the sanding task of five subjects with motor funct ion disorder were measured. The accuracy of the trajectories was similar in all the actual measured subjects. These outcomes have a potential for the development of rehabilitation training programs and evaluation methods.

The development of a robotic exoskeleton to restore and rehab, hand and finger function is highly competitive nowadays. The robotic exoskeleton is an active actuated mechanism implemented in rehabilitation system, in which each finger attached to an instrumented lead screw mechanism allowing force and position control, according to the normal human setting. The robotic device is a direct driven actuated based on ergonomics measurements, capable to assist in flexion and extension motion. As an adaptation mechanism, it's also compatible with various sizes and shapes of anthropometric human‘s finger. The integration of DC servo motor and lead screw mechanism were the main features of the interface, which allows independent motion of the five fingers with small and lightweight actuators. The device is easily transportable, efficient safety performance, user friendly and offer multiple modes of training potentials. This paper presents the measurements implemented in the system to determine the requirements for finger and hand rehabilitation device, the design and characteristic of the whole system.

Physical rehabilitation is the key for recovering motor control and function for patients with neurological disorders. Conventional therapy procedures tend to be labor intensive and non-standardized, especially in the area of hand and finger rehabilitation. Robotics technology offers a way to reduce the burden of the physiotherapists in a repeatable and measurable manner. This work describes a novel finger rehabilitation approach for hand motor functions recovery targeting early acute stroke survivors using an active exoskeleton robotic device. The device is designed based on anthropometric measurement data of hand ergonomics. The device is able to assist the subject in performing flexion and extension movements. The main specification of the device includes a differential system with a current sensing element and a lead screw mechanism which allows for the self-governing movement of each finger through the usage of small actuators. The device is safe, easy to deploy, integrated with sensing element and offers multiple training possibilities. Moreover, it has been observed that the device could offer an objective evaluation of the patients’ motor function activity, suggesting its potentiality for a customized home-based therapy program for patients.
