Product and process digitalization is pervading numerous areas in the industry to improve quality and reduce costs. In particular, digital models enable virtual simulations to predict product and process performances, as well as to generate digital contents to improve the general workflow. Digital models can also contain additional contents (e.g., model-based design (MBD)) to provide online and on-time information about process operations and management, as well as to support operator activities. The recent developments in augmented reality (AR) offer new specific interfaces to promote the great diffusion of digital contents into industrial processes, thanks to flexible and robust applications, as well as cost-effective devices. However, the impact of AR applications on sustainability is still poorly explored in research. In this direction, this paper proposed an innovative approach to exploit MBD and introduce AR interfaces in the industry to support human intensive processes. Indeed, in those processes, the human contribution is still crucial to guaranteeing the expected product quality (e.g., quality inspection). The paper also analyzed how this new concept can benefit sustainability and define a set of metrics to assess the positive impact on sustainability, focusing on social aspects.

To analyze the quality of three-dimensional (3D) model for aircraft structural parts designed by model-based definition (MBD) technology, an approach combining analytic hierarchy process (AHP), hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set (HFLTS), and fuzzy synthetic evaluation is proposed. According to all levels of quality standards and part specification-tree elements, a quality assessment index system is constructed from four sub-models of parts 3D model: design model, process model, tooling model, and test model. In addition, the weight of each index is calculated using the AHP. Then the assessment model is established by using a configurable index system model, HFLTS, fuzzy synthetic evaluation, and assigning uniformly and quantitatively the index system through quality grade division rules of indexes and triangular fuzzy numbers. Finally, a case application is used to illustrate the proposed method. The application of this method can make the quality analysis of parts 3D model more effective, accurate, and efficient. This paper can not only help enterprises identify higher-weight and error-prone design factors, but also guide designers in modeling.

Defects generated by the UK supply chain is much higher than its global competitors. Defects impact costs and production throughput due to unpredictable disruptions resulting in many non-value adding activities. However, defects data associated knowledge have rarely been considered and implemented as the manufacturing capability in existing design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) data/knowledge bases. On the other hand, current ICT systems used in the aerospace industry are not flexible enough to keep up with the new requirements of collaborating to manage knowledge properly, and the use of real-time manufacturing data generated in manufacturing activities. This research was carried out in collaboration with one of the UK’s largest aerospace companies in order to analyse the complexity of design and manufacturing activities of high-value safety-critical aerospace products. The results of the work are presented, and a novel approach and system was developed, that can be used to support DFMA using defects knowledge. The approach was implemented as a knowledge management system using collaborative design principles. Key findings from the main contribution in the context of extended enterprises of high value low volume safety critical product manufacturing are discussed.
