The wood industry is a basic industry supplying primary materials to produce a wide range of products. The wood processing in sawmills bridges the transformation flow of raw materials to final products using machinery. Over the last decade, the global market for wood products has become highly competitive. As a result, sawmills are continually striving to improve their efficiency throughout their production process. Recent advances in automation systems and manufacturing technologies provide traditional sawmills with an unprecedented opportunity to be transformed into automated manufacturing plants to increase their efficiency. This opportunity motivates sawmill planners to adopt decision optimization technologies for enhancing their production yields. This transformation will support sawmills to remain resilient in current and future competitive markets. Although there is a vast amount of literature on decision-making in wood manufacturing in sawmills, a comprehensive overview of related approaches and findings with a special focus on optimization of decision processes is still lacking. The review firstly focuses on exploring opportunities provided by optimizing decision-making processes in the wood manufacturing along with associated roadblocks and challenges. Then, we explore methodologies adopted in the literature when aiming for the design and implementation of optimal decision-making systems. Finally, we provide references and guidelines for researchers and manufacturers interested in the topic, as well as formulate research gaps and recommendations for future research directions.INDEX TERMS autonomous production machines, automated wood processing, decision-making, decision support systems, optimization

Performance analysis of direct solar dryer driven by photovoltaic thermal energy recovery and solar air collector for drying materials and electricity generation

The direct‐type solar dryer is characterized by very simple construction, less maintenance, cost‐effectiveness, and is easy to handle. The present study aims to enhance the performance of a direct‐type solar dryer. To achieve this, the photovoltaic (PV) panels with thermal energy recovery and solar air collector were integrated with the direct‐type solar dryer. In this study, the PV panels with thermal energy recovery and solar air collector were utilized as preheating units to raise the air temperature before entering the direct solar dryer. Moreover, the PV panels were utilized to drive the air blower. In this study, three incorporated models are suggested to study the performance of the solar dryer integrated with PV panels with thermal energy recovery and solar air collector. The model of each component was validated by the previously recorded empirical data. The results confirmed that the dual utilization of the PV panels with thermal energy recovery and solar air collector as a preheating unit raised the air temperature entering the direct solar dryer by the rate varying between 29°C and 42°C within the period 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Also, the moisture content of banana samples inside the direct solar dryer reduced from the initial value of 72% (wb) to the value of 33.4% (wb) within 7 h (9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.). During this operating period, moisture removal from the banana samples varied between 110 and 400 g/h.

This paper presents a modeling of an instrumental indirect solar wood dryer less expensive functioning in a Cameroonian climate applied to the climate of Yaoundé. The dryer is easy to build and electric energy is only used for the fan. Applications are done on Iroko wood (Chlorophora excelsa), a tropical wood 50mm thick most utilized in Africa. A satisfactory agreement between experimental and numerical results was found. Influences of thickness, wood initial water content and airflow rate were studied.
