Mode-locked 193 μm thulium fiber laser with a carbon nanotube absorber

Abstract: We report a ring-cavity thulium fiber laser mode locked with a single-wall carbon nanotube absorber used in transmission. A carboxymethyl cellulose polymer film with incorporated carbon nanotubes synthesized by the arc discharge method has an absorption coinciding with in the amplification bandwidth of a Tm-doped fiber. This laser is pumped by an erbium fiber laser at 1.57 microm wavelength and produces a 37 MHz train of mode-locked 1.32 ps pulses at 1.93 microm wavelength with an average output power of 3.4 m… Show more

“…In another approach, cellulose derivatives (polymer) were used as a dispersion agent to achieve the initial aquatic dispersion of SWNTs. Finally, resulting dispersions were mixed with the water-soluble polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [168,169], cellulose derivatives [69] or polyethylene oxide (PEO) [170] and dried in order to achieve a freestanding film.…”

“…The pioneering research was focused on the application of mirrors and fibre ferrules with a sprayed solution of CNTs [208] or by direct growth of the CNT in a substrate [209]. However, the most straightforward method is utilisation of CNT-polymer films sandwiched between fibre ferrule connectors or fibre ends [51,69,210].…”

“…It was successfully demonstrated by using different kind of saturable absorbers (SAs). There are a lot SAs that been used to generate the laser such as graphene [6], single-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) [15], [16] and semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) [17]. However, SESAMs cannot be used widely due to the complexity of fabrication and not cost effective.…”

“…6 Different approaches have been pursued to obtain mid-infrared frequency combs. [7][8][9][10][11] One possibility is the use of mode-locked lasers, which are also of considerable interest for their ability to generate ultra-short light pulses at high repetition rates. Mode locking of lasers has been a subject of intense research because of the complex nonlinear dynamics involving the self-organization of many laser modes.…”
