This article analyzes how participants of an online discussion thread related to a YouTube video on homophobia expressed their opposition to homophobia. Both the video and the 403 posts in the discussion thread are in French. On the surface, the data are characterized by strong antagonism between the stances that support and those that are critical of LGBTQ persons. However, a closer look at the posts expressing a pro-LGBTQ stance reveals considerable variation among them: they range from an open deconstruction of homophobia to more ambivalent positions that draw on ideologies circulating within the heteronormative order and are naturalized in the everyday discourse of spontaneous online interactions. We analyze five categories of posts expressing different forms of pro-LGBTQ stances to highlight their fuzzy boundaries with homophobic stances. The analysis draws on argumentative discourse analysis, focusing on process types used to construct arguments and topoi, as well as deictic elements through which the authors of these posts express their distance vis-à-vis homophobia and LGBTQ persons.

Examples of posts from three Finnish (236 posts) and one French (410 posts) discussion threads are analyzed with regard to lexicon, grammar, speech acts, and topoi. The aim is to illustrate the different means used to express hatred or speech pertaining to ideological and thematic spaces in which the expression of hatred may be legitimized. The examples represent everyday discourse, which is an influential arena for the materialization of ideologies. Given the lack of linguistic and discursive tools used exclusively to express or legitimize hatred, doing research on hate speech always entails taking a specific ideological stance: neither linguistics nor pragmatics or discourse studies can provide a definition of hate speech that is valid in all contexts. Triangulating different methodological and theoretical perspectives is necessary to produce convincing research results.

Bien que les entreprises du web affirment soutenir une politique inclusive en matière de modération de contenus et qu’elles affirment s’engager dans la lutte contre la haine en ligne, elles sont régulièrement accusées de censure à l’encontre de communautés minorisées. Cet article étudie la façon dont les dispositifs de modération des réseaux sociaux numériques (en particulier Twitter) affectent les régimes de visibilité des LGBT et des travailleurs et travailleuses du sexe en ligne. L’étude s’appuie sur une approche en méthodes numériques dédiée au repérage et à la collecte de tweets supprimés afin de permettre la formulation d’hypothèses relatives à ce qui a suscité les suppressions conduisant à une censure abusive. Elle explore, en particulier, l’hypothèse selon laquelle certains mots clés référant à une culture sexuelle et de genre suscitent une modération automatisée en raison de leur caractère injurieux.
