SummaryThis study deals with the results of the 2023 fieldwork at the extramural cemetery of the Late Bronze Age harbour city of Hala Sultan Tekke. One of the three excavated tombs in 2023 was the undisturbed Chamber Tomb XX, which is dated around 1300 BC. It contained a riveted bronze mirror, a rare type in Cyprus at that time, which is part of a mortuary context of four individuals out of a total of 17 individuals and 264 complete objects, many of them imported from a vast area, which includes the Mycenaean, Minoan, Egyptian and Levantine cultures. The current paper presents this mirror and associated contexts. As regards the provenance of the mirror, the Aegean is suggested as the area of manufacture, and more precisely Crete, suggesting potential evidence of direct contact between individuals from Crete and Hala Sultan Tekke.

The Mycenaean necklace found in a tomb in the Limenaria cemetery at Mochlos, Crete, consists of a row of faience beads and a central gold bead, and it is dated to the LM IIIA period (about 1400-1300 BC). Studies on faience have shown that different production technologies were used in this period: efflorescence, cementation and direct application methods. The efflorescence method was used in Egypt. The manufacture of the faience from Mochlos indicates an Egyptian origin, but the shape and the style are Aegean. The gold bead shows a deliberately applied rose patination on one side and a normal golden colour on the other. The analyses showed that the composition of the pink film is very similar to that on Tutankhamun's sequins. The technique of colouring gold is known from objects found in royal tombs in Egypt. This piece of jewelry shows, like the faience, a strong Egyptian technological influence.

During the Late Minoan (hereinafter LM) II to IIIB phases, roughly between 1450 and 1200 BCE, Cretan society went through a series of changes, the causes and circumstances of which are still the subject of dispute. One of the key issues that remains is the question of the cultural identity or identities of Cretan communities after the widespread, violent destructions of the LM IB palatial centres and settlements on the island. This discussion involves a debate on the long-standing and complex relationship between Crete and the Mycenaean Mainland. It is generally assumed that rulers from Central Greece or at least elite groups originating from this area took over the palace at Knossos during or after the Neopalatial (Middle Minoan III-LM I) collapse (or even caused it) and gradually acquired political control over much of the island with the establishment of a new centralised, Greek-speaking administration using the script Linear B, while also initiating abrupt cultural changes within Minoan society.
