Möbius sequence in children exposed in utero to misoprostol: Neuropathological study of three cases

Abstract: The findings suggest a circulatory mechanism to the Möbius sequence, with vascular disruption involving the territory of the subclavian artery, occurring in a critical period of embryonic life between six to eight weeks postconception. These cases add further evidence of the role of misoprostol as a teratogen.

“…2,10 This combination of symptoms is also known as Möbius sequence and is recognised as a possible sign of an early embryonic insult. 11 The facial palsy seen in Möbius sequence is often bilateral; in contrast, the congenital palsy seen in the present study was unilateral. 12 Congenital facial palsy is also a frequent finding in other conditions involving malformations caused by early pregnancy incidents, such as Goldenhar syndrome and 'CHARGE' syndrome (the latter comprising coloboma, heart abnormalities, retardation of growth and/ or development, and genital and ear anomalies).…”

“…Disruption of the blood flow around subclavian arteries and vertebrae during early morphogenesis could result in ischemia of the brain stem, especially around the 6th and 7th cranial nerve nuclei, causing a number of defects, as well as producing Mö bius S. “…Several agents, when used early in pregnancy, have been linked to this sequence: thalidomide (Strö mland and Miller, 1993), cocaine (Hoyme et al, 1990;Kankirawatana et al, 1993), benzodiazepine (Courtens, 1992;Strö mland et al, 2002), ergotamine (Hughes and Goldstein, 1998), and misoprostol (Fonseca et al, 1991;Coêlho et al, 1994;Gonzalez et al, 1998;Boudoux et al, 2000;Marques-Dias et al, 2003).…”
