Summary Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are emergent concepts in terms of infrastructure‐less communication. The data dissemination is usually done using broadcast schemes. Data broadcast in VANETs is a challenging issue due to the high mobility vehicles and the varying density. On one hand, these vehicles have to share and disseminate the safety‐critical information, in real time, to other intended vehicles. On the other hand, the existing broadcast solutions do not succeed, till now, to fulfill VANETs requirements especially in terms of performance and QoS. In this paper, we propose a new QoS‐aware broadcast method in order to face VANETs communications challenges. We choose to adapt a concept originally devoted to mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and join it to other specific VANET techniques to introduce a new broadcasting protocol in the aim of optimizing QoS fulfilment. The proposed solution is fundamentally based on enhanced kinetic strategy assisted with fuzzy logic for QoS‐aware multipoint relay (MPR). The protocol efficiency is eventually tested through an experimental study and compared with existing methods. The results prove the over‐performance of the proposed solution.

Edge caching is being explored as a promising technology to alleviate the network burden of cellular networks by separating the computing functionalities away from cellular base stations. However, the service capability of existing caching scheme is limited by fixed edge infrastructure when facing the uncertainties of users' requests and locations. The vehicular caching, which uses the moving vehicles as cache carriers, is regard as an efficient method to solve the problem above. This paper studies the effectiveness of vehicular caching scheme in content centric networks by developing optimization model towards the minimization of network energy consumption. Particularly, we model the interactions between caching vehicles and mobile users as a 2-D Markov process, in order to characterize the network availability of mobile users. Based on the developed model, we propose an online vehicular caching design by optimizing network energy efficiency. Specifically, the problem of caching decision making is firstly formulated as a fractional optimization model, towards the optimal energy efficiency. Using nonlinear fractional programming technology and Lyapunov optimization theory, we derive the theoretical solution for the optimization model. An online caching algorithm to enable the optimal vehicular caching is developed based on the solution. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to examine the performance of our proposal. By comparison, our online caching scheme outperforms the existing scheme in terms of energy efficiency, hit ratio, cache utilization, and system gain.

Vehicular network is an essential part of the contemporary wireless network, which plays a vital role in intelligent transportation system (ITS). Driven by the ever‐increasing needs for making our lives and cities smart, vehicular network nowadays goes beyond the information exchange among vehicles, transforming to “vehicle‐to‐everything” (V2X). In this article, we present the fundamentals of vehicular networks and vehicle‐to‐infrastructure (V2I) networking, called V2X networking for simplicity. First of all, we start by discussing the emerging use cases for V2X networking, together with their service requirements. Second, we elaborate on several vehicular networking technologies and protocols, with the main focus on dedicated short‐range communications (DSRCs) and cellular V2X. At last, we provide the outlooks for future V2X networks and identify the research challenges.
