Mobility of people with lower limb amputations: scales and questionnaires: a review

Abstract: A multitude of measurement scales and questionnaires are available for differ in methods and measuring range. Measuring mobility by a scale has been shown to have limitations. Several authors did extensive research but they all measure only a number of aspects of mobility. Consensus about the measurement of mobility of lower limb amputees is not available in the recent literature.

“…2 Outcome in rehabilitation is also influenced by psychological and cognitive wellbeing of an individual, social support, economic status and multiple prosthesis related factors. 3,4 After lower limb amputation, the main aim of the rehabilitation team is to restore mobility and optimum physical functioning of an individual. In these patients assessing physical mobility thus plays an important role.…”

“…To accurately monitor the impact of therapeutic interventions, particularly of prosthetic trials, there is a great need for simple and appropriate outcome measures of prosthetic mobility in people with lower limb amputation. 3,5,6 Quality of life is each individual's perception of his/her position in life, in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns. 7 Medical interest in QOL has been stimulated because of the increase in life expectancy, better survival rates after major injuries and a zest to provide near normal life to trauma survivors.…”

“…To accurately examine the impact of therapeutic interventions, in particular of prosthetic treatments, psychometrically sound outcome measures of mobility are needed (Rommers et al 2001). In LLA patients, self-report measures can be very useful because they allow a mailing-based follow-up (Legro et al 1998;Miller et al 2001;Ferriero et al 2005).…”

“…Information concerning rehabilitation progress, prosthesis comfort, and amputee motivation could be gained if free-living use of the prosthesis could be quantified. Although questionnaires provide useful data [5][6][7], the information obtained is subjective.…”
