The former mercury ore deposit of Merník in Eastern Slovakia was selected for the investigation of the environmental availability of mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) in mine soils. Singlestep extractions with four chemical agents (deionised water, ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA), acetic (CH 3 COOH) and hydrochloric (HCl) acid solutions) and chemical analysis of the common nettle (Urtica dioica) were used to determine the availability of the three metals. Regardless of the type of extraction, the soluble ratios of metals in mine soils increased in the order of Hg≤CrCH 3 COOH ≈ EDTA>˃H 2 O. The total or extractable metal concentrations in soil did not correlate with their concentrations in aerial parts of the common nettle, however, its ability to accumulate these trace metals in roots and aerial parts copied the results of extraction tests, i.e. Hg≤Cr

The impact of the mutual interactions between salinity and the phytoavailability of potential toxic elements (PTEs) on the adaptation of halophytes in their natural habitat is complex and far from clear. Herein, we aimed to evaluate salinity- and PTE-induced oxidative stress in selected halophytes and the antioxidant responses of these plants. For that, five salt marshes were selected, and the physiological responses of dominant halophytes (Tamarix nilotica, Heliotropium crispum, Zygophyllum coccineum, Halopeplus perfoliata, and Avicennia marina) were evaluated against the physicochemical features of their rhizosediments. The tested locations varied in their physicochemical properties and showed various levels of salinity stress and a low fertility status. Distinct variations in ten PTE concentrations were recognized among locations and within plants, with Cr and Co showing the highest ecological risk indices. The high levels of salinity and PTEs were associated with higher foliar levels of malondialdehyde, particularly in A. marina and Z. coccineum. The bio-concentration ratio revealed hyperaccumulating potentials of PTEs by the tested halophytes. Z. coccineum showed effective accumulation of Co, Fe, and Pb, while T. nilotica exhibited effective accumulation of Cu, Cd, and Zn. H. perfoliate had higher accumulation of Cr and Hg, whereas A. marina accumulated a significant amount of Hg, Cd, Zn, and Mn. H. crispum leaves accumulated the highest Ni levels among the tested halophytes. Altogether, our results highlight the potential risk of pollution of the tested areas with PTEs and the efficient physiological adaptation of each of the tested halophytes as a unique biological system. They also reflect the high capabilities of the tested halophytes as phytoextractors of their corresponding PTEs and their potential as efficient tools for phytoremediation of salt- and PTE-affected lands.

The Guanajuato mining district has had mining operations for over 500 years. This mining district is one of the most important Ag-Au producers in Mexico and is among the largest deposits in the world. The natural enrichment of heavy metals and metalloids (HM&Ms) in the Guanajuato River basin (GRB), and the different mineral recovery methods used over time have caused relatively high concentrations in stream sediments and soil, posing a potential risk to the environment. This study conducted column experiments to evaluate the potential of HM&Ms leaching from the soil into the groundwater upstream of GRB. The column experiment results were modeled (inverse modeling) in PHREEQC in order to analyze the soilwater interaction. Inverse modeling determined that pH, redox conditions, mineralogy phases, and cation exchange control the mobility of HM&Ms. Soils in GRB have the potential to release Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni in low concentrations (<1mg/L) due to the stability of mineral phases and alkaline pH. However, soil leachates can precipitate clays and oxyhydroxides, which, at alkaline pH, increase their retention capacity, controlling the leachability of HM&Ms. Clay minerals present the major phases in the leaching processes, followed by carbonates and sulfides. This research demonstrated that mineralogy is the main factor influencing the availability of HM&Ms in the groundwater of the Guanajuato River Basin.
