It is generally considered that public transport is a more restrictive, less freely chosen form of public space, one that generates less chosen encounters than other public spaces. Daily travel can nonetheless be considered a context of familiar everyday experience, and public transport a place that is likely to reconcile exposure to others with a certain form of privacy. In our research, we used video to observe the ordinary experience of day-to-day mobility in situ on the A train that serves the Paris urban area (France). It reveals a taxonomy of the small arrangements with self and others that travellers display on public transport, by investigating the patterns of attention to others and the methods employed by individuals to cope with the anonymity and ambivalence of everyday experience.

Dans cet article, nous examinons la manière dont les technologies numériques de l’information et de la communication accompagnent une transformation durable de la mobilité internationale étudiante, dans un contexte sanitaire qui a obligé à repenser les séjours à l’étranger encadrés. Nous verrons que ces outils offrent une formidable opportunité de rompre avec l’immobilité dont sont victimes certains étudiants qui ne peuvent pas partir en mobilité à l’étranger. Nous expliquerons comment les dispositifs numériques relevant de l’internationalisation à la maison permettent d’augmenter le capital de mobilité de tous les étudiants. Ce faisant, nous plaidons en faveur d’une hybridation des mobilités physiques et virtuelles, que l’étudiant pourra valoriser dans un parcours mobilitaire, dont nous proposons une définition. Un nouvel habitus mobilitaire est ainsi en devenir.

While digital tools and platforms have become part of our everyday life, authors of fictional narratives voice the emerging hopes and fears resulting from interactive digital media. In this paper, I analyze two recently-published French novels, namely Un amour d’espion by Clément Bénech (2017) and Licorne by Nora Sandor (2019), in terms of how social networks affect in new ways the processes whereby identity is built and negotiated. Both novels focus on characters whose development as human beings is prevented by the contrasting illusions of ephemerality and digital hypermnesia. I show that the way characters use social media entails a sense of virtual disembodiment that shapes their perception of their physical bodies and surrounding spaces. I also argue that their online activity as represented in the novels invites reflections on the archival values of images and on social networks as fragmentary repositories of the self. In conclusion, I discuss how issues of ephemerality and disembodiment affect narrative choices in both novels.
