Mobile Spine Osseous Sarcoma: Descriptive Epidemiological Analysis Based on a National Population-Based Study

Abstract: Background: Primary osseous sarcomas of the mobile spine are rare bony tumors. Ewing sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma and osteosarcoma constitute the majority of primary bone sarcomas of the spine; however, other rare sarcoma tumors may also affect the spine. In order to perform an epidemiological study of theses tumors, national registries may help to evaluate data for populations with similar characteristics. Methods: A population-based study was designed based on data from the Iran National Cancer Registry… Show more

“…Likewise, the 5-year overall survival rate for ESTS progressively increased from 47% in the 1999-2005 group to 77% in the 2013-2019 group. Given its bimodal age distribution coupled with the aging population, both the marginal increase in incidence as well as larger proportion of older patients with ESTS is not unexpected [8]. Te increase in the proportion of patients with lower-grade tumors at diagnosis may be related to advances in imaging, detection, and histopathologic characterization over the study period [7,9].…”

“…The study of Ewing sarcoma was performed at this center from 2008 to 2015, based on the Iranian National Cancer Registry (INCR) (7). Also, in a published study of soft tissue sarcomas based on INCR, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of total soft tissue sarcomas was 6.34 per million person-years (8). Regarding the epidemiology of spinal malignancies, 122 patients with a definite pathological diagnosis of chordoma were registered in this center (9).…”
