Laboratory experiences are often contrived and limited in scope by resources. Additionally, students often fail to transfer the knowledge gained in the laboratory to "real world" systems. At many institutions, lecture courses are linked to laboratories that may or may not be taken within the same semester, making it a challenge to insure concepts learned in lecture are mastered by practice in lab. A novel approach is needed to widen the breadth and flexibility experimental problems to increase students' proficiency and knowledge transfer. Moreover, this approach should facilitate exposing students to laboratory experiences temporally closer to the time in the lecture sequence when they are learning the pertinent concepts. To this end, PDA-enabled laboratory experiences have been piloted at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and are being implemented at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) using the National Instruments' LabVIEW PDA Module and off-the-self sensors.Index Terms -PDA-enabled experiments, inquiry-based, inlecture laboratory experiences.

This paper examines a particular methodology of teaching engineering design to undergraduate engineering students, which relies on Lego ® Mindstorms ™ . A number of important issues are addressed, including the timing of the design module within the programme, prior knowledge required and assessment components. The module, which has been running for three years, was found to have many positive attributes, not only in relation to the core design activity, but also in generating good team-building and engaging students with the degree programme.

Outcomes based assessment has shown that introducing a platform for learning™ based on a robot referred to as TekBots™ into the first two electrical and computer engineering (ECE) courses enhances students' sense of community, innovation capabilities, and troubleshooting skills. At Oregon State University, Corvallis, ECE students enhance their fundamental understanding of ECE concepts as they construct and build upon their individual robot (TekBots). They experience first-hand the fun associated with engineering while gaining a sense of accomplishment. This platform will eventually extend through the four-year curriculum so that, rather than a single point project, the robot serves as a platform that connects and integrates the content from course to course.
