Mobile collaborative live video mixing

Abstract: We report on design research investigating a possible combination of mobile collaborative live video production and VJing. In an attempt to better understand future forms of collaborative live media production, we study how VJs produce and mix visuals live. In the practice of producing visuals through interaction with both music and visitors, VJing embodies interesting properties that could inform the design of emerging mobile services. As a first step to examine a generation of new applications, we tease out … Show more

“…In [20], improving the mobile device UI for navigating a video timeline has been explored. Other studies related to mobile videos include collaborative live video creation [21] and the practices around video consumption (more precisely mobile TV content) [7], where for instance gift-giving practices (e.g. recording content for a friend) were exposed.…”

“…Research on mobile video broadcasting services focusing on in-situ streaming include the studies of Engstrom on how users collaboratively create videos. In Engstrom's work [4] the scenario of video jocking is described and algorithms discussed on ensuring a suitable video quality of the composed video mix. With Shrestha's virtual director [8] an automatic algorithm based on an objective quality function was realized.…”

“…Recent reports of studies investigating collaborative video production [6,7,22] present findings about human factors when multiple users collaborate in video creation, and also provide design implications for collaborative systems. Engström et al [6] analyzed dance clubs' VJ work and presented the SwarmCam prototype, which enables VJs to create collaborative videos with audiences. Engström et al [7] also studied how live video can be produced as a group activity by amateurs using a tool called Instant Broadcasting System.…”
