Mobile phones with integrated video cameras have become ubiquitous tools that people use both to document everyday surroundings and to express themselves artistically. In this paper we report the findings of a user study on user created mobile videos, where the actions of 11 active mobile video users were documented for 2 weeks, the collected material including diaries, device logs, and altogether 255 videos. We describe the patterns related to the creation, sharing and consuming mobile videos, revealing characteristics of both context and content of the video material.

Mobile video broadcasting services offer the opportunity to instantly share video from mobile handhelds to a large audience over the Internet. Our research focuses on large-scale events that attract dozens of users to record video in parallel. In such scenarios, our aim is to design a collaborative mobile video broadcasting service that composes video streams from multiple sources to create one video stream with enhanced perceived quality. Our realization of such a service combines high quality video streaming and at the same time reduces the network load.

Recent progress in information technology enables people to easily broadcast events live on the Internet. Although the advantage of the Internet is live communication between a performer and listeners, the current mode of communication is writing comments using Twitter or Facebook, or some similar messaging network. In one type of live broadcast, musical performances, it is difficult for a musician, when playing an instrument, to communicate with listeners by writing comments. We propose a new communication mode between performers who play musical instruments, and their listeners by enabling listeners to control the performer's camera or illumination remotely. The results of four weeks of experiment confirm the emergence of nonverbal communication between a performer and listeners, and among listeners, which increases camaraderie amongst listeners and performers. Additionally, the dramatic impact of a performance is increased by enabling listeners to control various camera actions such as zoom-in or pan in real time. The results also provide implications for design of future interactive live broadcasting services.
