Running applications in the cloud efficiently requires much more than deploying software in virtual machines. Cloud applications have to be continuously managed : 1) to adjust their resources to the incoming load and 2) to face transient failures replicating and restarting components to provide resiliency on unreliable infrastructure. Continuous management monitors application and infrastructural metrics to provide automated and responsive reactions to failures (health management) and changing environmental conditions (auto-scaling) minimizing human intervention.In the current practice, management functionalities are provided as infrastructural or third party services. In both cases they are external to the application deployment. We claim that this approach has intrinsic limits, namely that separating management functionalities from the application prevents them from naturally scaling with the application and requires additional management code and human intervention. Moreover, using infrastructure provider services for management functionalities results in vendor lock-in effectively preventing cloud applications to adapt and run on the most effective cloud for the job.In this paper we discuss the main characteristics of cloud native applications, propose a novel architecture that enables scalable and resilient selfmanaging applications in the cloud, and relate on our experience in porting a legacy application to the cloud applying cloud-native principles.

Software-defined networking (SDN) features the decoupling of the control plane and data plane, a programmable network and virtualization, which enables network infrastructure sharing and the ''softwarization'' of the network functions. Recently, many research works have tried to redesign the traditional mobile network using two of these concepts in order to deal with the challenges faced by mobile operators, such as the rapid growth of mobile traffic and new services. In this paper, we first provide an overview of SDN, network virtualization, and network function virtualization, and then describe the current LTE mobile network architecture as well as its challenges and issues. By analyzing and categorizing a wide range of the latest research works on SDN and virtualization in LTE mobile networks, we present a general architecture for SDN and virtualization in mobile networks (called SDVMN) and then propose a hierarchical taxonomy based on the different levels of the carrier network. We also present an in-depth analysis about changes related to protocol operation and architecture when adopting SDN and virtualization in mobile networks. In addition, we list specific use cases and applications that benefit from SDVMN. Last but not least, we discuss the open issues and future research directions of SDVMN.

Abstract-Mobile cloud applications have become extremely popular in the last years. Location-based services, navigation, online gaming and social networking are a representative set of "always on" cloud applications in which the same or partially overlapping content is delivered to multiple users. Network coding is a well matching solution to improve content delivery. In this paper we propose the vNC-CELL technique, which uses network coding to combine information flows carrying the same or overlapping content that has to be delivered to co-located users. vNC-CELL executes coding functionalities in a mobile cloud through virtualization as these operations are computationally intensive if performed locally at the base station. Performance evaluation obtained from NS-3 simulations confirms vNC-CELL ability to improve network throughput and reduce download times for the users.
