The inbuilt flexibility along with easy set-up and low maintenance cost causes MANETs to be increasingly useful in catastrophe management, battlefield surveillance; etc. The infrastructure-less performance of MANET has made it more vulnerable to intrusion than ever before making the security of network all the more acute. As the previously used security systems fail to protect the MANET from insider attacks, the need for an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) becomes evident. IDS based on Mobile Agents is long been used for securing the MANET. The prior works seem to suffer from computational overhead leading to performance. This paper proposes a mobile agent based IDS in order to reduce the overheads. The use of distributed ID consists of multiple mobile agents which assist over a large network and to make communication with each other, or with a central server that provide advanced network monitoring, incident analysis, and instant attack data. This as a whole reduces the network bandwidth usage by moving data analysis computation to the place of the intrusion data & sustains on the heterogeneous platforms.

Abstract:Due to the rapid growth of the network application, new kinds of network attacks are endlessly emerging. Thus, it is of paramount importance to protect the networks from attackers. Consequently, the Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are quickly becoming a popular requirement in building a network security infrastructure. Most existing and commercial IDS are generally centralized and suffer from a number of drawbacks, e.g., high rates of false positives, low efficiency, etc, especially when they face distributed attacks. In this paper, we introduce a novel mobile agent-based intrusion detection system focusing on the misuse detection approach, called DIDMAS (Distributed Intrusion Detection using Mobile Agents and Snort). DIDMAS takes advantages of the mobile agent paradigm to implement an efficient distributed system, as well as the integration of existing techniques, i.e., the well-known IDS SNORT. Carried out experiments showed that our proposed system presents better performance as well as a good scalability compared to the pioneer known centralized IDS SNORT system over real traffic and a set of simulated attacks.

Virtual Knowledge Communities (VKC) are current popular media on the internet through which the access and sharing of knowledge and information among communities of similar interest groups are made possible. Agent's technologies are presently being deployed to facilitate the success of VKC, which is a virtual place where knowledge agents can meet, communicate and interact among themselves. Recently, quite a number of works have been done on agent-based knowledge communities but most of these works have not actually considered the possibilities of intrusion and the consequences that these malicious attacks can have on those systems. This paper therefore addresses the issue of intrusion detection problems in the sharing of knowledge in agent-based virtual knowledge communities. Intelligent agents are proposed as measures to guide against any spy or intruder into the VKC environment. The relevance of this method in current scientific research cannot be overemphasized as the work shows great potentials of yielding promising results.
