Mobile ad-hoc routing protocols survey for the design of VANET applications

Abstract: Vehicular communications are considered as a key factor to improve road safety and enhance urban mobility. The design and deployment of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) involve several decision criterias that lead the research into new challenging tasks to be solved. Routing mechanism is a fundamental component for the success of any vehicular application; the particular features of VANETs -a highly dynamic topology, links frequently disrupted and a fragmented network -require an efficient, robust and scalab… Show more

“…However, due to the nature of the collision notification applications, i.e., a strict low latency and a highly reliable communication scheme for a delimited area of interest, we focus this work on the revision of multicast routing, specifically on geo-based protocols or geocast; in this context, multicast can be considered an efficient data dissemination method for vehicular communications [7]. Correspondingly, according to Michoud et al [8], the network layer of the VANET requires either adaptation of MANET protocols or new routing protocols design.…”

One key feature is the immediacy of the data and the real-time behavior of the phenomenon, in this case transportation, where an immediate response could be critical; for instance, enabling an ambulance or fast medical services (Michoud, Orozco, & Llano, 2012)to arrivejust seconds after an incident. In this context, the proliferation of smart-phones, applications, and services seems to be a positive element in people's daily life and their mobility life.…”

“…Indeed, QoE measurement functions can be obtained from QoS objective metrics by taking into account the human factors impacting the quality perception of the service, including user expectations, effectiveness and performance [24], [16], [4]. MANET routing protocols are categorized into three types: Proactive, Reactive and Hybrid protocols [25], [19]. Proactive routing protocols broadcast periodic monitoring messages for the creation, maintenance, and updating of routes in parallel with data transmission.…”
