Mo-doped cobaltous sulfide nanosheet arrays as efficient catalysts for the sulfion oxidation reaction promoting hydrogen production with ultra-low electric energy consumption

Xiangmin Tang,
Yang Zhang,
Fangfang Wu
et al.

Abstract: The doped Mo improves the SOR intrinsic activity of Co-based active sites in Mo–Co–S/NF; meanwhile, an advanced dissymmetrical acid-base-coupled electrolyzer is constructed to realize H2 and S8 production with low energy consumption.

“…The thermodynamic potential of the SOR (S 2− = S + 2e − ) is −0.48 V vs. SHE, much lower than that of the OER. 24 Therefore, the SOR is an ideal replacement for the OER to couple with the HER for efficient hydrogen production. 14,15,113,114 Furthermore, H 2 S is widely recognized as a perilous substance that poses risks to both the ecological environment and human health.…”

“…Therefore, the pH gradient membrane water-splitting system is proposed to tackle the above challenge. 24,38,40,42,143 In the asymmetric electrolyte systems with pH gradient, the HER is applied in acid or neutral electrolyte with more abundant hydrogen protons compared with the base solution, and the corresponding anode reactions (the OER, SAOR, and EOSR) occur in alkaline electrolytes. Besides, the electrochemical neutralization energy (ENE) of the asymmetric electrolyte with pH gradient can further circumvent the thermodynamic constraints to display the lower application voltage and energy consumption for hydrogen production.…”

“…Similar to the development of many new electrochemical energy storage technologies, 4–6 intensive efforts have been made to boost the electrochemical performance and stability of iron-anode materials in ARBs. Among them, one of the typical methods is to combine the iron-based materials with the carbon-based nanomaterials (such as CNTs, 7 graphene, 8 carbon fibers, 9 and so on) to enhance the conductivity and structure stability.…”

“…1–4 In addition, the constantly decreasing reserve of fossil fuels also propels a significantly urgent demand for green and renewable energy sources. 4–7 Nevertheless, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy are inherently intermittent, limiting their effective large-scale availability. 8–11 Therefore, there is a pressing need for the exploitation of efficient utilization methods.…”
