This article describes a 10-year longitudinal study of eating attitudes and behaviors. A sample of 509 women and 206 men completed a detailed survey in 1982 while they were in college. The authors contacted participants 10 years later and administered a 2nd questionnaire to assess stability and change in eating behaviors that occurred during the transition to early adulthood. Women in the study had substantial declines in disordered eating behavior as well as increased body satisfaction. However, body dissatisfaction and desires to lose weight remained at relatively high levels. Men, who rarely dieted or had eating problems in college, were prone to weight gain following college, and many of them reported increased dieting or disordered eating. The authors conclude that disordered eating generally tends to decline during the transition to early adulthood. However, body dissatisfaction remains a problem for a substantial segment of the adult population.

The hypothesis that perfectionism, body dissatisfaction, and self-esteem interact to predict bulimic symptom development was tested. This study replicates and extends previous findings (Vohs, Bardone, Joiner, Abramson, & Heatherton, 1999) demonstrating that the joint operation of perfectionism, perceived overweight status, and low self-esteem accounts, at least in part, for bulimic symptom development. Within the context of a longitudinal design, the current study, which used different measurement approaches and operationalizations than Vohs and colleagues, provided strong support for the model's ability to predict bulimic symptom 476

The fact that perfectionism, ineffectiveness and interpersonal distrust are transmitted independently of an ED in relatives suggests that they may be of potential aetiological relevance for BN. In contrast, diminished interoceptive awareness, heightened stress reactivity and perfectionistic doubting of actions are more likely consequent to, or exacerbated by, previously having experienced the illness. Finally, a sense of alienation and emotional responsivity to the environment are more likely to be associated with currently having BN.
