MMP‐2 expression precedes the final ripening process of the bovine cervix

Abstract: Collagen is denatured in the gradual cervical ripening process during late pregnancy, already before the onset of final cervical ripening at parturition. Matrix Metallo Proteinases (MMPs) might be responsible for this process. To investigate the presence and potential function of MMPs at the different stages of the ripening process, serial cervical biopsies were obtained from 10 cows at Days 185 and 275 of pregnancy (approximately 5 days before calving), at parturition and at 30 days after parturition. The mRN… Show more

“…370 Increases in MMP-2 expression/activity have also been observed in the final ripening stages and collagen denaturation of the cervix during late pregnancy. 371 MMP-2 and MMP-9 have also been detected in the bovine endometrium and myometrium during pregnancy. 28,103,366 We have shown an upregulation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the myometrium of late pregnant rats, and suggested a role of MMPs in pregnancy-related uterine remodeling.…”

“…Premature shortening of the cervix is the strongest clinical predictor of premature birth 10 . It is also critically important for making term delivery possible in humans 10 , mice 8 , sheep 12 , cow 13, 14 . How cervical remodeling is regulated is one of the major unanswered questions in female reproductive biology and critical for research on the prevention of prematurity 15 .…”
