“…These results are partially in agreement with a previous report from our group, showing that S100A12 alterations were related to gingival bleeding, but not to periodontal pockets, which could be due to the different clinical categorizations used in both cohorts. S100A12 was also related to increased burden of periodontal inflammation (22). According to these reports bleeding seems to be the main determinant of S100A12 levels in saliva and this might be related to the increased density of inflammatory cells in sites with bleeding (40).…”

“…The assay range of detection is 7.81-500 pg/ml. The assay was previously validated for saliva by performing spike and recovery tests (22). Saliva and plasma samples were diluted 1:1,000 and 1:5, respectively.…”

“…Since periodontitis is an inflammatory disease, characterized by alveolar bone resorption, we hypothesized that it may affect periodontitis by activating the inflammatory response. Furthermore, a recent study reported that the levels of S calcium‐binding protein A12 ( S100A12 ) were higher in participants with high periodontal inflammatory burden and were associated with percentage of bleeding on probing and presence of any type of tumour (Holmstrom et al, ). The levels of S100A12 in gingival crevicular fluid and serum increased with the inflammation of periodontium (Pradeep et al, ).…”

“…A number of studies have reported that salivary S100A8, S100A9, S100A8/A9, or MMP‐9 can differentiate patients with periodontitis from subjects without periodontitis with varying degrees of accuracy (Holmström et al, ; Karna, Shin, Kim, & Kim, ; Kim, Shin, Kim, Kim, & Ahn, ; Ramseier et al, ; Wu et al, ). Although there have been a limited number of longitudinal studies, how the levels of these biomarkers change during disease progression from health to periodontitis and following treatment of the disease remains to be elucidated.…”
