ηc Production at LHC and Implications for the Understanding of J/ψ Production

Abstract: We present a complete evaluation for the prompt η_{c} production at the LHC at next-to-leading order in α_{s} in nonrelativistic QCD. By assuming heavy-quark spin symmetry, the recently observed η_{c} production data by LHCb results in a very strong constraint on the upper bound of the color-octet long-distance matrix element ⟨O^{J/ψ}(^{1}S_{0}^{[8]})⟩ of J/ψ. We find this upper bound is consistent with our previous study of the J/ψ yield and polarization and can give good descriptions for the measurements, bu… Show more

“…The differences among the numerical values reveal the difficulties to determine the exact values of the color-octet LDMEs. The work by Chao et al implies that a wide range of values for 1 S 8 0 can satisfy the yields and polarizations of the J/ψ production at hadron colliders [6,7,11,12]. The polarization puzzle can be understood in two different ways: the contributions from 3 [23], the continuum cross sections are sightly above 5 pb and below 10 pb.…”

“…For the long-pending polarization puzzle of J/ψ production, it seems also to be understood naturally using a e-mail: nophy0@gmail.com b e-mail: liukuiyong@lnu.edu.cn the NLO calculations [11]. Subsequently, the NLO analysis was also made for the η c production at hadron colliders and fitted the data well using a set of compilable LDMEs with the J/ψ polarization [12,13] 1 .…”

“…A different approach was taken in Ref. [46] where they found, for the J/ψ, O J/ψ ( 1 S [8] 0 ) can be negligibly small so that O η c ( 3 S [8] 1 ) does not play a role in η c production, allowing the color singlet contributions to dominate η c production, offering a way out of the problem. However, it does not provide a very good fit to the J/ψ polarization data.…”
