Q2Evolution of the Neutron Spin Structure Moments using aHe3Target

Abstract: We have measured the spin structure functions g(1) and g(2) of 3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized 3He target at a 15.5 degrees scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q2 evolution of Gamma(1)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(1)(x,Q2)dx, Gamma(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(2)(x,Q2)dx, and d(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)x(2)[2g… Show more

“…A comparable data set to the one presented here, covering a wide kinematic range, was collected for the neutron, using polarized 3 He as an effective neutron target and the spectrometers in Jefferson Laboratory's Hall A [20,21]. A more restricted data set on the proton and deuteron at an average Q 2 of 1.3 GeV 2 , covering the resonance region with both transversely and longitudinally polarized targets, was acquired in Jefferson Lab's Hall C [22].…”

“…Optical pumping is typically performed with ≈90 W of laser light from three fiber-coupled diode laser systems. The typical 3 He polarization achieved was 30% to 40% in the first experiments on electromagnetic form factors (Xiong et al , 2001; Xu et al , 2000) and neutron spin structure functions (Amarian et al , 2004, 2002; Zheng et al , 2004a,b). With the use of hybrid SEOP, the 3 He polarization was increased to ~45% for a more recent measurement of the neutron’s electric form factor (Riordan et al , 2010).…”

“…Eq. 2 is predicted to vanish according to the Burkhardt-Cottingham (BC) sum rule [1], and was studied by the E155 collaboration [2], as well as the RSS [3] and E94-010 [4] collaborations. The BC sum rule rests on a similar theoretical foundation as the more famous Bjorken and GDH sum rules so a violation -as suggested by the E155 data -would pose a serious challenge to well established theory.…”
